You may have heard about the family which was taking pictures from The Ledge in Chicago’s Willis Tower when a crack appeared beneath their feet. The see-through glass bay on Floor 103 called “The Ledge” was designed for this very purpose. It extends about four feet from the building.

After the recent incident, the Willis Tower wanted to reassure the public of The Ledge’s safety. They put out a statement which said, “A protective coating covering the glass surface cracked, not the glass itself.” They also said the cracks don’t affect the structural integrity of the ledge, which is “designed to occasionally crack.” When you are 103 floors high, I don’t know if it would make you feel better knowing that the coating of the glass floor is designed to occasionally crack. (Perhaps the next time I’m visiting the Willis Tower and I’m given the opportunity to take a picture on The Ledge, I’ll pass!)

Life’s Cracked Ledges

Hearing about The Ledge at Willis Tower reminds us of the fact that things once thought secure can quickly change. We’ve seen that in the stock market, the job market, and even in relationships. Things can quickly change, and life is a quick reminder. But one thing is solid, and that’s the Word of God. God’s Word has remained the same for over 2000 years, and there is no evidence that its truth will ever fail.

A lot of people are nervous because attempts are being made to dilute God’s Word so that it says exactly what we want it to say. In the Word of our Lord that is found in Hebrews 13:8, we are told, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” It was Jesus Christ who died for our sins and rose again. To receive salvation, we only have to trust in Him. Ephesians 2:8–9 clearly states, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” This powerful truth will not change, regardless of one’s status in life, their creed, or even their color.

A Sure-footed Soul

Maybe you’re on a ledge today that is cracking. It could be a ledge of financial security, popularity, friendships, or whatever seems solid right now. In only a moment, things can change. The good news is, no matter how unsettling your life may be, the Lord loves you with an everlasting love. He will not change!

Standing upon His steadfastness,

Dr. L.W. Edwards
